Meet Tony – ICF Accredited ADHD coach
I’m Tony Coward,
an ADHD coach with a unique perspective – I too have ADHD and navigate its challenges daily. My path to becoming a coach was as winding as the “squiggly” career paths many adults with ADHD experience.
From Sheds to Sheep to Sailing: My ADHD Journey
My professional journey has been anything but conventional. I’ve built sheds, farmed sheep and provided specialised transport for racing yachts across the UK and Europe. Each experience was a learning opportunity and honed my entrepreneurial spirit.
A Late Diagnosis, A New Direction
At 48, I received an ADHD diagnosis – a revelation that sparked a quest for understanding. Seeking guidance, I met with an ADHD coach, expecting a long conversation about finding a fulfilling career. Instead, she saw something in me I hadn’t yet recognized.
The Unexpected Suggestion
To my surprise, she proposed I consider becoming an ADHD coach myself. Initially sceptical, I soon realised the truth in her words. Friends and members of the support group I ran began to point out how I helped them find their own answers and I recognised my growing passion for supporting adults with ADHD.
Back to School
Determined to turn this newfound passion into a profession, I enrolled in an intensive ADHD coaching training program through ADDCA. This course, accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), provided me with the gold standard in ADHD coach training.
Finding The ‘Zone of Brilliance’
Now, I work with ADHD adults struggling with similar challenges to those I faced in the past. Together, we uncover their unique “zone of brilliance” where their skills, strengths, values, passions, energy, and creativity intersect. This is where the magic happens, where ADHD coaching can help ADHD adults harness their brilliance.
My Coaching Approach
-
Empathy and understanding are at the core of my approach in creating a supportive and collaborative environment for my clients. I listen actively and provide a safe space for clients to openly share their experiences and feelings without judgement.
-
Active listening is fundamental to how I connect with clients. I am fully present in each session, tuning in and connecting, not just to the words spoken but also to the deeper emotions and intentions behind them. By reflecting back what I hear and asking thoughtful questions, I help clients feel truly seen and understood and invite deeper exploration.
-
My coaching sessions are structured to the client’s chosen coaching topic. I work collaboratively with clients to identify specific, actionable objectives. This structured approach provides a clear roadmap for progress and helps clients maintain focus and momentum. Practicality is another pillar of my style. I offer solution-focused resources to address each client’s unique challenges to allow them to make a deeper study and gain greater understanding.
-
While providing support and guidance, I also challenge clients to step out of their comfort zones when necessary. I believe that constructive challenges, coupled with a supportive environment, can foster growth, resilience, and the development of new insights.
-
Ultimately, my coaching style is centred on creating a collaborative partnership with clients. Through empathy, self-awareness, goal-setting, practical solutions, and a focus on authenticity, I aim to empower individuals to manage their ADHD effectively, leverage their strengths, and achieve their personal and professional goals.
